Moo Brew/Mountain Goat/Wheaty Collaborative Brew Launch & The Wheaty's 10th Birthday Party

In what rates as the perfect 10th Birthday present for The Wheaty, good friends and long term allies Moo Brew & Mountain Goat proposed a three-way collaborative brew; our concept - their know-how, stainless and hard work. Naturally this got us jumping out of our pants with excitement - how could we resist?

Our concept: No 10% ABV, 10 Malts, 10 Hop additions, 100 IBU business for us in our 10th year – we liked the idea of a little beer with big flavour (just like us). Anti-Superhero if you like, but with enough Hops and style bending to unsettle a Moo; enough cold fermentation to lager a Goat and enough chirp to get the Wheaty spanked...

We figured a Black Pilsner would fit the bill; smooth, dry, roasty, herbal & bitter. Or, as Goat Dave put it; “So this beer is pretty dry, subtly roasty, strongly hoppy yet smashable? And black. Love it already."

‘Captain Moo’ OJ and Goat Dave worked our rough & ready recipe into respectable shape*, Dave came up with a terrible name which OJ & I proceeded to make worse, and Weizeny Zehnter Jahrestag SCHWARTZHOPF LARGER mit Muhen und Ziege was born. Or ‘SchwartzHopf’ to her friends.

Mid-April we all headed down to Hobart to tease out SchwartzHopf - Moo’s first ever collaboration at MONA - in one of the most stunningly located Breweries in the country. Moo Brewers Scott & Dave did all the heavy lifting, OJ oversaw, Goat Dave formalized the #hashtag & us four (notional) Brewers enjoyed legendary Moo hospitality while picking the brains of some of the finest Brewers in the land; we were veritable kids in a candy shop.

Early days yet, but early indications are that SchwartzHopf is going to be a cracker; there’s already talk of Goat hosting next year’s three-way collaboration brew day - if we all make it out of the Wheaty’s 10th birthday Party in one piece…

(* Though for the record it must be said both Dave & I had to temper OJ’s Superhero tendencies to make a boozier, drier and more bitter version than the original.)
